Chlorophytum comosum ‘Variegatum’, commonly known as the Variegated Spider Plant, is one of the most beloved and enduring houseplants worldwide. Belonging to the Asparagaceae family and native to the tropical and subtropical regions of South Africa, this variety is prized for its arching, striped foliage and easy-going temperament.

The leaves form a graceful rosette and feature a fresh green centre edged with creamy-white margins. Each strap-like leaf is long, narrow, and slightly curved, giving the plant its fountain-like shape. Mature plants send out trailing stems that produce clusters of small white flowers followed by baby plantlets (offsets), which can easily be propagated.

Compact, adaptable, and visually elegant, Chlorophytum comosum ‘Variegatum’ adds brightness and movement to any room and looks especially striking in hanging baskets or elevated pots where its runners can cascade freely.

Chlorophytum comosum ‘Variegatum’ – Care Guide

Light

Thrives in bright, indirect light. Tolerates medium to low light, but bright conditions help maintain strong variegation. Avoid harsh direct sunlight, which may scorch the white edges.

Watering

Keep the soil lightly moist in spring and summer, watering when the top 2–3 cm of soil feels dry. Ensure the pot has good drainage, as spider plants dislike sitting in water. Reduce watering in winter.

Temperature and Humidity

  • Temperature: Prefers 18–26°C. Avoid cold draughts and temperatures below 10°C.

  • Humidity: Adapts well to normal indoor humidity but appreciates occasional misting during dry periods.

Soil and Potting

Use a free-draining, all-purpose peat-free compost. Spider plants grow quickly and may become root-bound; repot every 1–2 years in spring to maintain healthy growth.

Feeding

Feed every 2–3 weeks during spring and summer with a balanced liquid fertiliser. No feeding is necessary in winter.

Pruning and Maintenance

Remove any brown leaf tips or damaged leaves using clean scissors. Cut back runners to control spread, or leave them to trail for a fuller, cascading look. Baby plantlets can easily be rooted in water or soil to create new plants.

Growth and Maturity

A fast-growing and resilient houseplant, Chlorophytum comosum ‘Variegatum’ typically grows 30–45 cm tall with runners that can extend up to a metre.

Common Issues

  • Brown leaf tips: Caused by tap water (fluoride/salts), low humidity, or over-fertilisation. Use rainwater or filtered water where possible.

  • Yellowing leaves: Overwatering or poor drainage.

  • Pests: Rare, but may occasionally attract mealybugs or aphids.

Background and Benefits

The Variegated Spider Plant has been a household favourite for decades due to its striking good looks and effortless care. It’s also one of the best plants for improving indoor air quality, as confirmed by NASA’s Clean Air Study. With its cheerful striped leaves and cascading growth, it brings life and freshness to any home or workspace.

Great for chewing and fetching
Size: Small (9 in), Style: 2 Knot Rope Bone, Size: Small (9 in), Style: 2 Knot Rope Bone
My puppy was chewing everything and this satisfied her urge to chew. As a bonus she also loves playing fetch with it. The rope is about 8 inches long overall, but only about 3 inches from the insides of one knot to the inside of the other knot. This is great for a puppy or small dog. My puppy loves to chew on this rope, especially at the knots. When we first got this rope we could play tug of war with it, but as she has grown, we eventually needed a longer rope for safety playing tug of war so my hands don’t get too close to her mouth. We have had this one for about 3 months and it is holding up really well. It has survived the washing machine nicely. My puppy is a chihuahua mix and is currently 7 months old and about 10 pounds. She is probably an average chewer. Definitely not a dog that destroys a toy in a day.

My dog loves this rope toy! I thought it would feel cheap and unravel easy, but it actually seems quite durable and my puppy seems to like the way it feels as well.

Close...but not quite the length.
Size: XL (16 in), Style: 2 Knot Rope Bone, Size: XL (16 in), Style: 2 Knot Rope Bone
I will admit, I thought their picture was off, because when I saw 16" in the title I was expecting the distance between the knots to be 16 inches in length. So if you're looking for a good length tug-of-war rope for a medium to large dog, look somewhere else. I'm not returning it, it's good quality cotton rope asides that. My dog needs a new toy and cotton ones are harder to find. Next time I'm going to their amazon store directly to look for what I wanted though. I will buy from them again, I like the quality and the fact that, for once, cotton is actually cotton.

Great toy
Size: Small (9 in), Style: 2 Knot Rope Bone
I got this because my puppy chews through the other kinds of rope toys. This one is laying though. Only thing is, she's eating off the loose strings. Lol So she's pooping strings all the time

The strings on the end are super engaging and the rope itself holds up really well
Size: Small (9 in), Style: 2 Knot Rope Bone
Super cost effective way to redirect chewing!! Our 4 month old corgi quickly made this is favorite toy. He loves the strings on the side and tugs on it endlessly, and the main rope was pretty firm at first but has softened up while maintaining its strength. Highly recommend as an interactive toy or just something for your dog to chew on their own so you can take some time to chill on your own!
